Running Tip of the Month!

Beat the heat!

Allow about two weeks to acclimate to the heat.  Once acclimated, make sure to take fluids along with you on any run over 90 minutes.  Make sure you take in enough sodium along the way.

The Great Eastern Trail Run Series promotes trail running and trail conservation by introducing runners and walkers of all backgroundsto the beautiful Charlottesville Trails.  All of the GETRS races have a trail conservation theme.  Every trail race has a canine component, where participants can run or walk with their dog or with an SPCA dog.  The SPCA is on site with their puppies.  Proceeds from the Canine Run/Walk benefit the SPCA.

The condtions were perfect for a trail run.  Three days of heavy rain packed down the fallen leaves, making the trails not as technical.  The temperature was in the mid 50s, with sunny skies.  The course was changed this year (see new course map), making the course faster, easier to navigate and more spectator friendly, since the runners went by the start/finish for their second aid station.  The race was won by Andrew Schroeder of Charlottesville (1:33:11) and Diana Burk (1:42:46).  Stephen Schmitz was the Great eastern Trail Run Series WINNER!  The other finishers included Bob Clouston, Steven Craig, Jack Muhler and Paul Everett.  The Charlottesville Trail Running Club was out in full force, with Eric Moore (40-49 age group winner), Bob Clouston (best blood award), Kate McDowell and Delia Kulukundis.

In the Canine race, all the dogs and their owners had a wonderful time, and the SPCA dogs had a great day out in the woods.  A special proce was awarded to Blake Puhak and his dog Jocelyn for finishing ALL canine events this year!

The Low Impact 5K trail race was won by local UVA runner James Erickson.  James has won numerous races in the area, and we'll be sad to see him go when he leaves for the Academy of Fine Arts this summer.
